Super Bowl 2019 Halftime Show Predictions

December 8, 2018 by Alex

The Super Bowl is one of the most important events in American culture as it is among the few remaining elements that symbolize monoculture. The Super Bowl 2019 will be held in Atlanta on February 3rd at the Mercedes Benz Stadium and will be aired by CBS network. Marked by its large viewership of more than 100 million people, the show is definitely highly selective of the content it presents to its audience.

Some people watch the Super Bowl because of the game itself, others are fascinated by the commercials, while others are always looking forward to the halftime shows. The Super Bowl halftime show gives artists an opportunity to expose themselves to new fans, do promotions for their projects, as well as elevate themselves into a club of legendary people who have ever performed on this popular event.

2018 Super Bowl Halftime Performance

In 2018, Justin Timberlake had the golden opportunity to perform during the halftime and he did very well. The star successfully brought memories to his fans by performing some of his most beloved hits such as “SexyBack”, Suit & Tie”, and “Cry Me A River”. Unlike other artists such as Beyonce who show stopped by getting into a dance-off with Bruno Mars, or Lady Gaga’s who did a mock-jump, Timberlake’s highlight was a selfie that he took with a young fan.

There are many hip hop artists who hail from Atlanta including Migos, Future, Jeezy, T.I., Gucci Mane, and OutKast. On this regard, some people think that the halftime show should be dominated by stars from that city. Bruno Mars agrees with this since a few months ago, he predicted that T.I, Gucci Mane, or Outkast should get the spot via his Twitter. Apparently, NFL does not operate that way.

From the past halftime performances, the selection is barely done according to where one is from. For instance, in Houston, Beyonce did not perform, and neither did Mars perform in New Jersey. In 2018, no one would have thought that Timberlake would be given a chance in Minneapolis instead of making it a Prince-themed jam. Clearly, Super Bowl halftime show is not about a city’s synergy. The selection is highly influenced by timing and money with a core aim to attract the highest advertisers.

Possible Performers

The halftime show is usually dominated by artists who have released an album just before the event, or one who has announced a major tour. On this note, Atlanta’s choice might be a little thin as long as they are trying to get a performance that will produce a spectacle. There is a possibility that OutKast might reunite. The NFL might want to lean on the hip-hop side and this gives Drake or Jay Z a high chance. Elton John would also be a perfect choice as it would be a chance to say goodbye to one of the cities he calls home during his farewell tour.

Artists that are unlikely to Perform

Cardi B might be out of the question as she promised to never make a performance on a Super Bowl event until someone gives Colin Kaepernick a job. Rihanna is also rumored to have turned down the offer because of Colin Kaepernick’s controversy. Pink, Bon Jovi, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, U2, and Ed Sheeran might not have a high chance of performing as they have already had their massive outings in 2018. They, therefore, do not need much attention. Kendrick Lamar is unlikely to be chosen as he performed during the halftime show of the College Football National Championship in 2018.

In September, Billboard made a confirmation that Maroon 5 will be performing at the 2019 Super Bowl halftime show. The “Girls Like You” hitmakers are yet to confirm this as an official statement has not yet been released.

However, Maroon 5 are not set to have any tours in February 2019, and this seems like a perfect opportunity for them to make their appearance at the Super Bowl halftime show. Variety also spread this word via Twitter by acknowledging that Maroon 5 will be bringing the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta down as confirmed by two reliable sources. With their vocalist Adam Levine as the lead, the pop band is anticipated to perform in a style similar to that of Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake.

Many Twitter users do not support this selection as they feel that artists from Atlanta would have been in the perfect position to get this opportunity. Some even considered it a lame move but we can surely expect a fire performance by this popular band. There is also some controversy on the halftime show performance since Adam Levine has been a coach at “The Voice”, a show that is aired by NBC, which is a rival Network to CBS. This only means a higher pay for Levine.

The pop band has release six studio albums with their first one, “Songs About Jane” debuting in 2002. Each of these releases have received a platinum certification. The group have maintained a strong presence in the chart over the years and this has been possible through their collaborations with artists such as Kendrick Lamar and Cardi B. With their performance, Maroon 5 are set to influence many big-name appearances especially from their many collaborations. We wish them all the best.
